Sunset is not the end of light
Sunset occurs when the upper edge of the Sun disappears below the horizon. Civil dusk, nautical dusk (EENT) and astronomical dusk follow, where those crossings occur. The end of astronomical twilight is the relevant solar threshold for a dark sky.
Find a sunset-facing view
Sunset azimuth is measured clockwise from north. West is 270 degrees, but the Sun does not set due west every day. The direction changes with season and latitude, and your actual horizon may be obstructed.
Use the photography window
The evening golden-hour interval here runs from solar altitude +6 degrees to sunset. It is a stated photography convention rather than an official astronomical event. Clouds and haze can change the actual quality of the light.
