What moonrise measures
Moonrise is the first appearance of the Moon’s upper edge above an ideal horizon, allowing for standard atmospheric refraction. Its direction is not always due east, and nearby hills or buildings can hide the Moon after the calculated time.
Full Moon and moonrise are different events
A full Moon generally rises near sunset, but the exact full-Moon instant is a global phase event. Moonrise is a local horizon event. Use the dated local table rather than assuming the two occur together.
When there is no moonrise today
A dash means the next rise does not fall within this local date, or the Moon stays above or below the horizon. Check today’s moonset and the previous and following dates before drawing conclusions about visibility.
